Is it OK to Postpone a Furnace Repair Appointment?

technician-works-on-furnace

If you know that your furnace needs service, it’s important to schedule an appointment sooner rather than later. Maybe you’ve been putting it off for financial reasons or because things come up and you simply forget to make the appointment. But putting off furnace service can cost you more in the long run and be potentially dangerous.

We encourage you to reach out to us if you suspect that your furnace needs some repairs ahead of the coming winter season. We can visit your home for a furnace repair in Chester Brook, PA, and make sure that everything is working the way it should to keep your home warm safely and efficiently.

Signs of Furnace Problems

First, it’s important to understand the signs that indicate something is wrong with your furnace. Examples include loud noises, bad odors, or changes in how your furnace is operating. You may notice changes in heating output or a lack of airflow coming out of the vents around your home. Anything out of the ordinary is a red flag that something is going wrong.

It’s possible that the signs you’re noticing are very early indications of furnace problems and that your heater is still largely operating like normal. But it’s better to be safe and address any problems sooner rather than later. If you ignore red flags, the problems will only worsen with each passing day.

Risks of Postponing Furnace Service

It’s so easy to tell yourself that you’ll call to schedule an appointment next week or next month. Eventually, your furnace will break down because of a lack of service and then you’ll have to schedule an appointment or go without heat altogether.

By the time a breakdown happens, a smaller problem has grown and spread. For example, if you have a gas furnace you may hear a booming sound during startup for a heating cycle. Eventually you get used to the booming sound and you forget that it was ever abnormal.

Unfortunately, the booming indicates that small explosions are happening inside the heat exchanger during each heating cycle. These explosions mean that too much gas is entering the chamber before the flame ignites and your furnace is taking on a lot of extra strain.

By the time you schedule your next furnace maintenance appointment or repair service, your furnace may be beyond fixing. If the heat exchanger cracks because of the pressure, the entire system has to be replaced. This is just one example. There are many other scenarios that can lead to permanent furnace damage when issues are ignored or service is postponed.

Service Frequency

Ideally, you should schedule furnace maintenance once each year. But if you have problems in between these appointments, don’t wait for next year to roll around before addressing something that you think is wrong.

Go ahead and schedule a repair appointment so that our team can make adjustments to your furnace. This investment can boost energy efficiency and extend the lifespan of your furnace so it can last longer than average.
