Considering Your Options
Three popular choices are central air conditioners, central heat pumps, and ductless mini splits. Central ACs and central heat pumps are very similar with one exception: heat pumps also provide heating in addition to cooling. Heat pumps have a few additional components that allow refrigerant to reverse direction within the refrigerant lines.
A heat pump can absorb heat from outside and transfer it into your home during the fall and winter seasons to heat the air inside. If you go with a standard central air conditioner, you’ll also need to invest in a separate heating system. This can take up more space although it does offer greater customization because you can choose if you want an electric or gas-powered heater.
Ductless systems are most similar to a central heat pump. They also offer both heating and cooling, but there is no attached ductwork necessary. Instead, there are air handlers installed throughout your home. These smaller units replace the need for a large central unit but they do still attach to a large outdoor unit.
HVAC Sizing
Once you decide on a type of HVAC system, you want to make sure it is properly sized. HVAC sizing isn’t precise since most systems fall within a range. One single system may work for a variety of home sizes in various areas of the country. Our team will assess your home for overall square footage and take things into account like high ceilings, large windows, and more people living in your home.
Some factors can make it more likely that you need a larger unit rather than a smaller one or vice versa. You don’t have to worry about figuring out the calculations. Our team will consider the factors above alongside selecting a model that fits the cooling needs of our climate zone.
Here in Pennsylvania, the summers are milder compared to states farther south and so you don’t need quite as much cooling power. On the other hand, the winters can be very cold so you do want to invest in a heavy-duty heating system that is ready to stand up to low temperatures.
Invest in Energy Efficiency
If at all possible, invest in an HVAC system with a higher energy-efficiency rating. There is a minimum efficiency rating in place to ensure you have a good system in place at a minimum. But why settle for the lowest accepted efficiency? Investing in greater energy efficiency now will pay off for many years to come as you save on monthly energy costs.
