Ways to Extend the Life of Your Current HVAC Unit

Whether your HVAC system is brand new or getting up in age, there are some steps you can take to help extend the lifespan a little bit longer. The steps might be a little different depending on your air conditioner’s age, but the tips will help nonetheless.

You can keep reading to learn how to extend your air conditioner’s lifespan, no matter what stage it is in. Then give our team a call when you need repairs or HVAC replacement in Chester Brook, PA. We are here to help you with all of your needs, no matter how big or small they are.

Temperature Settings

If you follow the guidelines set forth by the US Department of Energy, your thermostat shouldn’t be set lower than 78° for cooling. For many homeowners, this can seem unreasonably warm. You may prefer to set your thermostat closer to 73° or 74° for cooling. However, increasing the thermostat settings by a single degree can save you anywhere from 3-9% on energy costs.

If you currently set your thermostat to 74°, increasing it by a single degree at a time until you reach 78° can save you significantly on your monthly energy costs. It’s a good idea to take the adjustment slowly so you can get used to the change over time instead of trying to do it all at once. This reduces the strain on your unit so it can last longer.

Upgrades

Making upgrades to your existing HVAC system can make a big difference in efficiency. One example is switching from a standard thermostat to a smart thermostat. With Wi-Fi capabilities, a smart thermostat can help you automate energy efficiency settings. For example, in addition to the thermostat settings listed above, you can take it a step further.

Automate your thermostat to adjust the temperature a few degrees higher when you’re away from home during the workday and overnight while you’re sleeping. Then the thermostat can adjust back down before you wake up or before you return back home.

Another upgrade you can make is to the insulation in your attic. Over time, insulation can get weaker and smaller, leaving you with less ability to keep cool air inside and hot air outside. It’s also possible that you never had enough insulation to begin with. Blowing in more insulation can keep more cool air inside so your AC doesn’t have to work as hard for cooling.

Maintenance Steps

It doesn’t matter if your AC is brand new or if it is 10+ years old. It needs regular maintenance. Steps that you need to complete as a homeowner include:

  • Choosing an appropriate air filter for your system
  • Changing out the air filter on time every one to three months
  • Rinsing the condensate drain line with vinegar
  • Hosing off the outdoor unit to rinse away dirt buildup

Scheduling annual professional maintenance with our team is another great way to care for your unit. We can often identify problems before they get too bad. We can fix repair needs before they ever reach the point of impacting how your AC operates.

You also need to pay attention to the signs that your AC needs professional service. Even when you keep up with maintenance, things can go wrong occasionally. Scheduling a repair appointment before your AC breaks down completely will save you time and money.
