Loud noises coming from your heater are always alarming, but each sound can mean something completely different. In fact, a single sound could originate from multiple different causes depending on what’s wrong.
Keep reading to learn about some of the common reasons for a heater to make a banging sound and why it’s so dangerous. Then give our team a call for heating repair in Phoenixville, PA before the issue leaves lasting damage behind in your system.
Electric Furnace: Buildup on Burners
A banging noise coming from an electric furnace can mean that there is buildup on the burners. When the burners heat up, any buildup that has developed on top of them can pop in mini explosions that are happening, depending on what type of buildup it is. This is one reason it is so important to turn your heater off completely once each month and wipe down the inside cabinet, including the burners.
Doing this can prevent the buildup from exploding when the burners turn on to heat up. If you don’t clean off the burners, the buildup can burn onto the surface and create a lasting problem that will eventually mean you have to replace your burners entirely.
Gas Furnace: Ignition Problems
In a gas furnace, banging can mean that there are issues with ignition. It’s possible that the gas valve is releasing too much gas into the chamber or that the pilot light is igniting too late. The result is that too much gas is in the chamber when the flame finally does ignite and an explosion happens.
If you hear banging coming from your gas furnace, it is particularly alarming because these little explosions can add enough force to your heat exchanger that it ends up cracking. If this happens, your entire heating system needs to be replaced.
Bad Blower Motor
It’s also possible that the blower motor is to blame in any type of heater. If a fan blade warps it can bang as it spins around. Or if the blower motor is off-center, it can make a banging sound as it operates. No matter what the issue is, our team needs to assess the problem and get down to the root cause. That way we can prevent it from happening again in the future, ultimately protecting your heater from long-term damage.
Anytime you hear banging that alarms you, you should call right away for service and ideally turn your heater off completely until we are able to check it out. This will prevent additional damage from happening until we can fix the problem. Allowing the banging sound to continue on may lead to additional issues and a more costly repair bill when we do get to your home.
